Tabatha Jute is a fully fleshed out character and her adventures after she picks up a band of weirdo entertainers are fun. Tabitha Jute, the captain of the small ship Alice Liddell, was a very interesting protagonist to follow, and I enjoyed the development of her character through her relationship with her ship’s personality. I can't even bring myself to just skip the second and go onto the third, since that one only gets average reviews and says the first book is a lot better anyway. This wasn't earth-shattering by any stretch, but it was extremely enjoyable. With all the sudden turns, the story sometimes seemed pretty convoluted, but it was always entertaining. Out of boredom and frustration.Bit of a disappointment, this. The type where the characters are so vivid and well drawn that even if they weren't going through a bonkers adventure you would still enjoy the journey. Huge amounts of fun.An entertaining space opera with strong characterization. Colin Greenland’s Take Back Plenty (1990) It’s rare enough in the fields of Science-Fiction and Fantasy literature that a female protagonist plays the central role but one such character is Tabitha Jute, the lonely heroine of Colin Greenland’s epic Sci-Fi adventure-mystery ‘Take Back Plenty’. It might make a set-up for a TV sit-com. Full of crosses and double crosses, but it's yet another novel where I didn't find the characters particularly sympathetic.

The characters, several of which could have been really interesting, ended up underdeveloped. That I had a hard time getting into this novel may be betrayed by how many days it took me to read it, particularly given several days off work.

It also touches on a number of interesting issues, some are well handled, others less so. The other characters seemed neat in theory, but fell Take Back Plenty is a fun story that is reminiscent of pulp space adventures. The main action takes place in and around ‘Plenty’ and takes several unexpected twists and turns which belie the initially rather familiar and standard Sci-Fi tropes.

Indeed, if some story elements are fairly generic borrowings from elsewhere in the SF field, the story and characterization are anything but. Took me away into another world like a great book’s meant to. The plot, and the way it was structured, left me confused. That such dark yet honest Sci-Fi literature is now out of favour probably says much about the poor state of the genre at the moment and the road it has taken into increasingly vacuous TV and cinema-influenced pop-corn literature.Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:Enter your email address to follow ASF and receive notifications of new posts by emailBy using this site you are consenting to the terms and conditions detailed in the  Brian Aldiss and Michael Moorcock are on the cover, telling you what an epic-scale adventure this is.This book won the BSFA Award for the Best SF Novel of the Year 1990 (and the Arthur C Clarke award the following year) but I can't say that it really met my expectations. ). Published in 1990 it marked Greenland’s breakthrough success after several years… I knew it had one the Arthur C. Clarke Award and was a well considered piece of space opera but that was it. Colin Greenland's "Take Back Plenty" is an old-fashioned space adventure of a kind I don't run into very often. On the other hand I thought the writing was good, there were instances of humor and excitement, and some of the aliens were intriguing.
