I would liken it to a Michael Shaara work in the sense that it is factual, but reads like a novel. It took me about 80% of this book to figure out that it was written in 2003.
If, like me, you've read and enjoyed The Billion Dollar Spy several of the early chapters will be of strong interest. Not a complete nor thorough overview of the subject in question, but nevertheless an engaging journalistic oral history told from the point of view of one of the key players on the CIA side of things. This was a very slow read for me in that I would usually only read a few pages at a time and sometimes go days without reading it but the time spent was worth it.Really riveting although very long and detailed.
Quick and enlightening. Chock-full of history. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Many of the stories are familiar but this is one for the spy shelf. Focused on the cold war Era but touches quickly into the 2000s at the end mostly to show where the officers went to.I love a good spy story and this retelling of the final battles between the CIA and the KGB have the added benefit of being incredibly interesting, coming from a first-hand source, and being true. I selected this book based on reviews and subject matter.Rarely can an autobiographic author get out of their own way and accept some help.

A landmark collaboration between a thirty-year veteran of the CIA and a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist, The Main Enemy is the dramatic inside story of the CIA-KGB spy wars, told through the actions of the men who fought them. After a disappointing read of one of Tom Clancy’s later books (Red Rabbit, if you’re morbidly curious), I decided I wanted to read something with a little more bite. A bit dry at times, but the view inside the CIA and KGB at the end of the Cold War was amazingReads like your favorite Cold War spy novel. I love a good spy story and this retelling of the final battles between the CIA and the KGB have the added benefit of being incredibly interesting, coming from a first-hand source, and being true. It is divided into two sections. In between Bearden's account of the various positions he held at CIA in the 1980s and 1990s are stories of CIA and KGB case officers and agents who passed secrets between the two sides during the Cold War.
It sounded rather good natured - or at least, the impression I got was that the two services had a good deal of sympathy for one another because they alone knew the absurdity of the situation in which they found themselves.I was not taken with Milton Bearden's style of writing. So other than those two and a half small disappointments, this filled in some excellent gaps and also provided a touch of insight as to how, after the death of Casey, the Agency went through a load of directors.Written in a collaboration between veteran CIA officer Milton Bearden and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist James Risen, this fascinating look behind the scenes of the rivalry between the CIA and the KGB in Cold War espionage (specifically the last years thereof, from 1985 to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991) makes for an absolutely engrossing and insightful read.
