Starting as a small ember of doubt, distrust can become a full-on blaze. Nicely written and fascinating context. Having said that, “love has consequences” has to be up there with the top Worst Responses Ever to this problem. only 3 stars because a lot of the language reminded me of a harlequin novel, which was a complete turn off for me.A beautiful book about an African immigrant worker in Saudi Arabia and how his survival as a love toy for unmarried men turns around as he falls in love. It is a brutal story, exposing all of the corruption that a strict Muslim culture has created in human relationships.
I especially like the Pink Shoes. I enjoyed the story, although I warn that it contains graphic violence and sexual content.overall, i enjoyed gaining some insight to life in saudia arabia told from the perspective of an african immigrant. This is such a heartbreakingly honest memoir of Gavanndra Hodge’s life and how her family were torn apart after her younger sister Candy unexpectedly died whilst on holiday at only 9 years of age. I am compelled to recommend this book for its uniqueness and complexity.I thought this was a remarkable book. It is the story of Eritrean refugee Naser, living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, under strict Muslim law. She also finds her anger towards him overpowering at times.A really moving and shocking exploration of grief, moving forward (but in order to do so....moving back) and acceptance. The focus is on Naser and Fiore, who live in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and because they are not married are not allowed to meet in public under the strict Wahhabi regime of Saudi Arabia. Gavanndra Hodge is the daughter of an alcoholic model and a drug dealing heroin addict father who she adores. And the first one I read of this kind! Happy publication day to The Consequences of Love! Naser is an Eritrean (Ethiopian) refugee who ends up in Muslim controlled Saudi Arabia. I adored it, will be re-reading and recommending.Remarkable - a very moving and at times disturbing family story - elevated by excellent writing and beautifully read by the authorI gave this 4 stars for being an entertaining and moving read.
