Here is a collection of two short stories by Oscar Wilde. The Dean, who was a man of great culture and learning, was extremely fond of clocks, and had a wonderful collection of timepieces, ranging from the fifteenth century to the present day, and it seemed to Lord Arthur that this hobby of the good Dean’s offered him an excellent opportunity for carrying out his scheme. I love the gothic, so when someone slates it, I slate them. Not wishing to cause any problems to his future wife, he decides he best get it over with and starts planning to kill. Lord Arthur is attending a social event where a palm reader is present.
3.5 stars for this satirical Victorian-era novella by Oscar Wilde. Her pet chiromantist Podgers has read Lord Arthur's palm and foretold he would commit a murder. Arthur's aunt Lady Windermere and great-aunt Lady Clementina were impressively played by Catherine Wyncoll and June Brown respectively, oozing "upper crust" from every pore.I particularly enjoyed Joanna Silcox as the battleaxe Lady Julia Merton, mother of Sybil. It tells the story of Lord Arthur Saville who, attending a party at Lady Windermere's house, accepts to have his palm read by a fortune teller and learns a disconcerting truth: in the next future, he will kill a man. The story takes place in London, in the nineteenth century.
This was such a fun little story. The plot is an unlikely, even absurd one revolving around the proposed murder by Lord Arthur Savile of a relative, any relative, before his own marriage to Sybil Merton takes place. It's almost too short to warrant one.Reading Wilde is always a pleasure, and this collection of stories did not disappoint me in the slightest – although I must admit that I much prefer his plays. This lovely little story, made me cringe and laugh, almost in the same moment. A verdict of suicide is returned at the inquest and Lord Arthur happily goes on to marry.
