'Two American recording stars, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, who headed the bill in a rock'n'roll show at Bristol Hippodrome that week, and were due to fly home to America, were involved in a crash yesterday. EDDIE COCHRAN: Outrageously talented, remarkably handsome, internationally renowned, and dead at the age of 21. Mr Vincent, with a fractured collarbone, is still detained there. 'Within an hour of leaving Bristol for London after the last performance on Saturday, the hire car in which they were travelling collided with a lamp standard at Rowden Hill on the outskirts of Chippenham, Wiltshire. Wonderful memorieshe began it all. I remember Eddie, Gene and all the others on the show all together on stage for the finale.I will never forget that night. There is a very good documentary about Eddie done by the BBC I think. Eddie had arrived in the UK on 10th January 1960, to join a UK tour with Gene Vincent which had already been on the road since before Christmas. I grew up listening to his tunes and I've been playing live gigs now since the age of 15, I don't do a gig without a few Eddie Cochran licks, and of course a few Buddy Holly rhythms thrown in. He is also credited with being one of the first to use an unwound third string to "bend" notes up a whole tone—an innovation (imparted to UK guitarist Joe Brown, who secured much session work as a result) that has since become an essential part of the standard rock guitar vocabulary. I don't even notice it until after the gig, I suppose it's just built in.
