After a few fluctuations, the number of cases declined to 3 by 1973 and further to a couple of cases by 1975. The deaths declined to 33 by 1926 only to hit another peak by 1927 declining sharply to 33 by 1929. During childhood, five doses are recommended, with a sixth given during adolescence. When available, serologic testing for diphtheria and tetanus antitoxin concentrations may guide the need for continued immunization. The vaccine series should be completed subsequently unless there is a contraindication.
