We caught a fey taxi driver, I smiled the ride was free I felt like Amsterdam, she wanted more drugs and maybe me I told her dealer I was broke, he hired a cameraman We did a porno film for coke, I hear I'm big in Japan Well are you an illusion Or am I just getting stoned?
He gave the Americans what they wanted, so they will keep their end of the bargain and get them to safety in New York. His friend, the KGB man, has simply ordered the "rounding up of the usual suspects," and the unimaginative, one-dimensional thinker, "the Bishop," thinks Count Rostov has fled to Finland and beyond.
Yes, he may want freedom for her but he was big on friends and family- why persuade her to go when she is not going to have access- ever again- to anyone that she loves? In the spirt of classic Russian literature, held so dearly in this novel, it is the fate of characters to suffer within their environs while seeking bits of pleasure in an otherwise tragic story.
It's something every parent finds out, that they have to let go and find life anew, on their own again. She was famous in movies before talkies came out so she was most known a lot younger. She leaves him for another. I appreciated everyone's comments after reading these, his remaining in the Soviet Union makes perfect sense.
We aren't told how he traveled.
I'm no scholar, i just actually saw the movie for the first time in its entirety… well the ending Really struck me as beautiful and almost ironic.
I thought maybe the willowy character was his sister. It was surely shocking and left an impression, but I felt that the characters didn't do anything to deserve that ending. Who knows what happened next. I for one am happy to be here. And now I am more torn with my thoughts for the end. He had no papers; he was on death sentence if he left the hotel.
We needn't worry too much about him. He loved Russia, but he also loved Sofia and he knew that her mother would want her to be able to express herself freely. After all- when she is hurt- he doesn't hesitate to leave the hotel.
You have to give a reason why you think it is so.I remember people laughing at the ending in the theater. He loved her so much that he wanted, like her mother Nina before her, for Sofia to be free to follow her own course in the world.
And as she got older, she performed on stage which would not have been seen by as many. Is it possible that Rostov used the bullet in the second dueling gun to kill himself, and the last scene was a fantasy of his return, with the two little kids being himself and his sister when they were young? Not only is Osip not going to attempt to find him, but everyone thinks he left Russia and went to Finland the movie of august rush is a very interesting story. He could have stayed in Paris when the revolution broke out, yet he chose to return home.
I'm not sure that Anna would have left with him though. It has been interesting reading the different interpretations given here. Seeing people give up is a shock in itself. If you got caught in an extraordinary ( particularly supernatural ) situation , most people wouldn't rise to it.
I simply loved this book. I don't think he'd risk leaving her alone in the world.
If you recall he did leave Russia before the revolution but came back knowing the risks. It eats at the core of how much we all want to live. Not every movie has a message. I felt convinced that they would remain hidden as a couple as Anna had previously cast an invisibility spell over the count. Ever to see Paris again? At first I was disappointed that the Count did not escape to be with Sofia but the more I thought about it the ending made perfect sense. I thought the twist of going "home" was brilliant for a character who had been entrapped for so long. They'd just die.You want the movie to be fair ?! Just finished the book.. which I enjoyed enormously... but.. it's very 'old fashioned' ... for Rostov to be such a 'goody two shoes' gets a bit grating.. to have no cynicism or malice makes him unbelievable Well done and Bravo, Mr. Towles! The Ending: ONLY if you've read the book (spoilers) He loves his Best Friend. His Best Friend takes her back because he will always love her. The ending is true to the character of Count Rostov who retained his love and connection with his native country through all the years of his house arrest in the Hotel Metropole.
